My Concentration is a study of line through my exploration of human anatomy. I have focused on a shift from realism, with full value and three-dimensions, into a flat presentation of anatomy accompanied by a developed line style. This transition towards a more two-dimensional figure helped amplify the importance of the contour line’s effect.

I knew I wanted to explore human anatomy from the beginning of the year. Pieces 1 and 4 were the first I developed with a general idea of mental illness or instability in mind. So my concentration started developing to focus on how things internally can affect us externally and really focusing on making surrealist pieces. I created piece 5 thinking about a spiraling and I used a scribbled continuous line in order to create an unstable effect. In piece 6 I recognized a use of line that I decided to explore and develop. After discovering this style of line I began to consider how I could use this line to further explore human anatomy. I began this process making piece 10 and created a type of layering and focused on flattening the anatomy in a way that complimented the line. The layering took me in two directions one was to abandon the shape of anatomy and focus heavily on line like in piece 9 and the other was to make the layering work against itself like in pieces 11 and 12. I came to the conclusion that the line and flatness and layering were all dependent on each other. Eventually the line usage became the defining characteristic of the anatomy.
